A few weeks ago I was exploring options for creating a time lapse movie using a Mac. There are a number of options out their but none of them were quite right. So I created my own. Using two freely available software downloads and a python script I got just what I wanted.

This process create a Quicktime movie from a directory of images. I really like this approach because it is easy to manage and adjust as you are working.

How-To

Download InstantShot! at www.digitalwaters.net

Install it and use it to capture all of the content for your time lapse movie.

Once you are happy with all your pictures head on over to www.3am.pair.com

Download and install their QTCoffee package.

Make sure you can run ‘catmovie’ from the command line.

Download pics2mov.py from this page and place it one folder above your images.

In a terminal navigate to where the pics2mov.py script is copied.

Run the pics2Mov.py script to create your movie (see below for more details.

Using pics2mov.py

To use the python script you will need to know three things.

The name of the directory that holds the images you want to turn into a movie.

The number of second to place in-between each of the images

The name of the final movie

Those are the three things pics2mov.py expects when run.
pics2mov.py targetDirectory secondBetweenFrames outputFileName

example;

python pics2mov.py targetDir/ 3 myMovie.mov

Download

pics2mov.py

Introduction

Do you remember those paper snowflakes we made in school as kids? You’d fold up a sheet of paper, make some random cuts with plastic scissors and unfold it to reveal your hidden artistic genius?

A few years back while teaching a Flash course I developed an exercise a lot like that. It was intended to illustrate how MovieClips can be placed inside other MovieClips. The exercise turned out to be a lot more fun then expected. My students and I got lost in the endless art and design possibilities of this simple technique.

This video tutorial doesn’t focus on the technical details of embedded MovieClips but it does show you the simple steps needed to create some beautiful and emergent design patterns in Flash.

Create the Base Layer

The first step when making this type of button is creating the base layer. This layer defines the shape of your button and will eventually hold it’s background colour and stripe effect.

Start by adding a layer called base.

Click on the rectangle tool (R)

In the properties panel set the rectangle corner radius to 5.

Create a rectangle using the mouse to the size and shape you need.

Switch to the selection tool (V)

Select the rectangle and change it’s fill colour from white to green.

Erase the border by selecting it and and pressing the delete key.

Select the rectangle and convert it into a MovieClip.

Call the MovieClip “base colour”.

Edit the properties and assign an inner glow effect to the rectangle.

Adjust the ‘blur’ and ‘strength’ to give it a subtle dark inner shadow.

This is a personal look and feel choice here. Play with it until it feels good to you.

Creating the base.

Start by creating a vertical line. (N)

Click and drag downwards. Hold the ‘SHIFT’ key to constrain the line to a single direction.

Select the line and convert it into a MovieClip symbol.

You can do this by pressing the ‘F8′ key or by right clicking the mouse on top of the line.

I named the symbol ‘leg’ but feel free to name it anything you want.

We will be creating eight of these in total and their purpose is to help with alignment.

Copy and paste the MovieClip.

Rotate the copied MovieClip 90 degrees clockwise.

Make sure that you copy the MovieClip. This effect won’t work if you create a new line.

Repeat the copy, paste and rotate steps two more times.

Switch to ‘outline’ mode. This will help us align the objects more accuratly.

Use the Zoom Tool (Z) to magnify the area where the four lines meet.

Carefully align all the MovieClips to the same point.

Use the arrow keys to nudge the lines into position.

Select all four lines and copy and paste.

Rotate the copied lines 45 degrees clockwise.

Move the copied MovieClips so they are on top of the original lines.

Using the arrow keys again, nudge the lines into position.

These lines will serve as the base for the shapes we are about to create. Make sure you save at this point so you can come back to it at any time.

SciFi Pattern

First we will create a SciFi pattern.

Double click the top leg to ‘edit in place’

Lock the bottom layer.

Add a new layer.

Select the line tool. (N)

Make sure that the line has a stroke height of 2 pixels and the cap type is set to ‘none’.

Zoom in so the line fills the whole stage.

Using the line tool draw three sides of a box on the top layer.

Notice how those lines are being duplicated in the copies.

Everything that you do in one box automatically happens in the others.

Select the newly drawn line and convert it to a MovieClip.

I named my MovieClip ‘half leg’. Feel free to be more creative.

Copy the MovieClip and Paste it beside the original.

Flip the MovieClip from left to right by using the transform tool. Change the percent value of ’100′ to a value of ‘-100′ percent. This is a quick way to flip MovieClips in Flash.

Double click on the left hand MovieClip so that you are editing it in place.

Select the line tool. (N)

Add some vertical and horizontal lines. I find that using only vertical and horizontal lines make for a good sci-fi look. Think circuit board.

Things are a little too complex now. So lets remove the original middle line and space things out a bit.

I love how the smallest change in position effects the overall look. Play around with the position of the legs until you are happy with the effect.

You can get some pretty neat effect by playing around inside the ‘half’ MovieClip. I am simply adjusting its position to see what effects it will have.

Play around until you find something that appeals to you.

I’m just trying different positions here. I hope you have as much fun as I do when playing with these shapes!

Tip: You can draw in the to the main MovieClip if you don’t want it duplicated inside it’s two child MovieClips.

I delete the box’s fill so all the duplicated box outlines behind it are visible.

Use the arrow keys to change the position of the box by small amounts.

I’m just playing around here looking for something nice…

Using Letters

Next I use a simple letter ‘S’ to create some unexpected designs.

Start by double clicking on the top leg to edit in place.

Lock the bottom layer and create a new layer above it.

Click on the Type Tool and type an ‘S’

Make sure the letter ‘S’ is selected and increase its size in the properties panel.

I used a 38 point font for this effect.

Time to erase the orginal middle line.

Move and rotate the letter ‘S’ until you find a pattern that appeals to you.

That looks good… Lets see what else we can do.

Wow – its hard to see the letter ‘S’ in there at all!

Icy Snowflake

Using short straight lines I will create a traditional style snowflake. If there is such a thing as a traditional snowflake!

Double clicking on the top leg to ‘edit in place’.

Lock the bottom layer and create a new layer above it.

Start by drawing some short random lines.

Select the newly created lines and convert them into a MovieClip.

Copy and paste the MovieClip.

Flip the MovieClip using the transformation tools.

Remove the original line and layer. Tip: You can just erase the layer, which will automatically delete anything on it.

Double click one of the MovieClips to edit it in place.

Using the line tool (N) create some more lines.

All done. By repeating this basic technique we have created three very different designs in a relatively short period of time. Why not see what you can do? Thanks for watching.

¡buena suerte!

Create the Bottom Shadow

The bottom shadow helps give the button depth and richness. The exact size and placement of the shadow is a personally choice. I recommend creating one as close to the example as possible and then play with it until you are happy.

Double click on the rectangle and select and copy the original shape. Don’t copy the MovieClip! Copy the shape inside the MovieClip.

Create a new layer and call it “bottom shadow”.

Paste the copied shape into the new layer.

Now align it so that it covers the original.

Access the colour properties.

Change the colour type from ‘solid’ to ‘linear’.

Make sure that the right hand side is set to black at 100% alpha and that the left hand side is set to black at 0% alpha.

Access the gradient transformation tool (F)

If the gradient transformation tool is not visible in the tool bar you can use the shortcut key (F) or press and hold the left mouse button on the free transform tool.

Use the round control handle to adjust the orientation of the gradient from horizontal to vertical. You want the shadow to start at the bottom and fade towards to the top.

Use the square control handle to reduce the height of the gradient.

Use the centre control handle to move the gradient lower.

The exact position and height of the gradient is up to you. You want a subtle shadow effect.

Creating the Highlight Layer

This is where the magic happens. A simple button turns into candy right before your eyes. It is simple to do and looks amazing.

Copy the graphic on to a new layer called “top gloss”.

Make sure that the graphic is still selected while you access the colour properties.

Change the left and right colour values from black to white.

Access the gradient transformation tool (F)

Using the round control handle rotate the gradient 180 degrees.

Adjust the height and position of the gradient so that you have a strong white gradient at the top of your rectangle.

Select the line tool.

Using the line tool draw a horizontal line about 1/4 of the way down from the top of your rectangle.

Using the selection tool bend the line upwards.

Delete the bottom part of the rectangle.

Remove the line by selecting it and pressing the ‘delete’ key.

Adjust the highlight gradient to your liking.

Click on the sub-selection tool.

Select the highlight to reveal the control handles.

Use the control handles to curve the arc shape upwards.

Creating the Stripes

I put stripes on this button because it draws attention (an important feature for a buy now button). Once you become comfortable with stripes try creating other effects or added different patterns in the background.

Lock the top gloss layer and unlock the base layer.

Make sure you are using the Selection tool.

Double click on the base layer to edit in place.

Create a new layer called stripes.

Copy the bottom layer.

Paste it into the top layer.

Lock the bottom layer.

Select the line tool.

Draw a diagonal line near the bottom of the rectangle.

Copy and paste the line.

Repeat…

Select all of the diagonal lines.

Use the align tool to make sure all of the lines are equally spaced

Make sure you don’t have the stage button pressed.

Drag the lines on top of the rectangle.

Deselect the lines.

Select and delete every second stripe.

Delete all of the lines.

Click on the top layer to select all of the stripes.

Making sure that the stripes stay selected change their colour and transparency.

Creating the Button Text

I went with very large text for the same reason I used stripes – to draw as much attention as possible.

Create a new layer called “text”.

Select the Text Tool

Create the text using the size and colour you need.

Adjust the size, colour and transparency as needed.

Make any final adjustments you need.

All Done!

Using the same techniques above try and create buttons like the ones pictured below. Good luck.

Extend the main class to Engine

Remove import of sprite

Set the stage size, framerate, and time management

Set the stage colour

super(800, 360, 60, false);
FP.screen.color = 0x00BFF3;

CREATE & SETUP WORLD

Create a new class called WalkingGround that extends World and place it in the world package

Remove the super()

ADD WORLD TO MAIN CLASS

Go back into the main game file add world

FP.world = new WalkingGround();

CREATE THE MAN ENTITY

y = 100;

ADD THE ENTITY TO THE WORLD

add the man to the world

add(new WalkingMan());

ADD KEYBOARD CONTROL (Part B)

override public function update():void {
if (Input.check(Key.LEFT)) {
if (man.currentAnim != "walk-left") {
man.play("walk-left", false);
}
man.x -= 1.8;
}
if (Input.check(Key.RIGHT)) {
if (man.currentAnim != "walk-right") {
man.play("walk-right", false);
}
man.x += 1.8;
}
if (!Input.check(Key.LEFT) && !Input.check(Key.RIGHT)) {
man.frame = man.frame;
}
if (man.x > 450) {
